FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Emergency Dental

WHAT CONSTITUES A DENTAL EMERGENCY?

Dental emergencies include severe toothache, broken or knocked-out teeth, loose teeth from trauma, lost fillings or crowns, abscesses or facial swelling, bleeding that won’t stop, and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth. When in doubt, call us – we’re happy to assess your situation and provide guidance.

CAN YOU SEE ME THE SAME DAY FOR AN EMERGENCY?

We make every effort to see emergency patients the same day. Call our office as early as possible, and we’ll work you into our schedule. For after-hours emergencies, we provide instructions for immediate care and urgent contact information at (208) 589-6931.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I KNOCK OUT A TOOTH?

Handle the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and try to place it back in the socket if possible. If not, store it in milk or saliva and get to our office immediately. Time is critical for saving knocked-out teeth – the sooner you get treatment, the better the chances of successful re-implantation.

HOW CAN I MANAGE DENTAL PAIN UNTIL I CAN BE SEEN?

Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help reduce pain and swelling. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your face for 15-20 minutes at a time. Rinse with warm salt water and avoid extremely hot or cold foods. Never place aspirin directly on the gums, as this can cause tissue damage.

WHAT IF I HAVE A DENTAL EMERGENCY AFTER HOURS?

For after-hours dental emergencies, call our emergency line at (208) 589-6931. We’ll provide immediate guidance and arrange urgent care if needed. For life-threatening emergencies involving difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to the nearest emergency room immediately.

WILL MY INSURANCE COVER EMERGENCY DENTAL TREATMENT?

Most dental insurance plans cover emergency treatments, though coverage varies by plan. We’ll work with your insurance company to maximize your benefits and provide treatment options that fit your budget. Don’t let cost concerns delay necessary emergency care – we can discuss payment options during your visit.
